Wednesday, June 2, The Hague - The Invictus Games, is an international sporting event for physically and or mentally injured military personnel. The postponed fifth edition of the Invictus Games The Hague 2020 will be held in Zuiderpark The Hague from April 16 to 23, 2022. At the request of the Hague Beweegloket, the Invictus Games organization will donate a paralympic tandem on June 2 to councilor of sports Hilbert Bredemeijer who in turn will hand over the bike to HSK Trias.

Tandem of paralympic level

In cooperation with the Fonds Gehandicapten Sport, a beautiful tandem racing bicycle was found. This donated racing bike was then thoroughly refurbished and restored to paralympic level. The bike will be donated to HSK Trias the cycling association that will use this precious bike for fanatic people from The Hague with limited vision. Trias supports, organizes and arranges this service.

Why?

The Beweegloket has approached the Invictus Games The Hague for a special request from a visually impaired resident of the municipality of The Hague who wanted to go racing. The Invictus Games would like to give something back and leave something behind for The Hague and its inhabitants, the city where this unique event is so welcome.

Wethouder Sport The Hague, Hilbert Bredemeijer: "For everyone it is important to be able to sport, so also for someone with a disability. Sport is good for our health, but it also provides social contacts and encounters. Moreover, sport is just plain fun! That is why I think that everyone, whether you have a disability or not, should have the opportunity to do the sport they want at their level and where they want. We are working hard on that in The Hague. This is very important, because the corona pandemic has caused us to move less. We want to get everyone in The Hague exercising again as soon as possible, now and especially after corona. This bike is a great example of that."

Conny Wenting, CEO of the Invictus Games The Hague 2020, said, "The Invictus Games The Hague 2020 organization is working closely with The Hague to commit to making sport a natural thing for everyone with a disability. In addition to the Cruyff Court Escamp that we have realized together, we want to support the people of The Hague to be able to sport and move around in their own environment, whether disabled or not. We would like to leave this as part of the event that will take place next year from 16-22 April in the Zuiderpark in The Hague. This bicycle, made available by the Fonds Gehandicapten Sport, contributes to this as well."

Jan Blok, chairman technical committee of HSK Trias: "We are a sporty and social club where everyone is welcome. From tourer to race cyclist and from young to old. There was therefore an immediate positive response to the question of who would like to ride on the front of the bike as a pilot. These people have indicated that they would like to ride a road bike. We are happy to work with you to make cycling accessible to people with visual impairments. Isn't it fantastic that we can make this possible for them? I think it's very clever of them to dare to do that, to sit on the back without being able to see properly."

About Invictus Games The Hague 2020

The Invictus Games is an international adaptive sporting event for Wounded, Injured and Sick Servicemen and women, both serving and veteran. The Games use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect of all those who serve their country.

The word ‘Invictus’ means ‘unconquered’. It embodies the fighting spirit of wounded, injured and sick Service personnel and personifies what these tenacious men and women can achieve post injury.

The Invictus Games is about much more than just sport – it captures hearts, challenges minds and changes lives.

The Invictus Games 2020 will be held in The Hague in the spring of 2022 and invites 500 competitors, from 19 different countries. They will participate in 10 different sports.
All competitors may bring two friends or family members who have helped during the rehabilitation process, at the invitation and expense of the organization.

The participants all have their own story of physical and/or psychological injury or illness. But all of them have found the inner strength to go on and reinvent themselves. Sometimes alone, often with the help of family and friends, but always through the power of sport. The Invictus Games The Hague 2020 is the platform to share their stories and add another chapter to their book of life.
